Brody had his first day of preschool last Tuesday. I was so nervous the night before, it brought back memories of me being nervous for my first day of school to start. I was nervous that he would be totally freaked out and not want to go, I was nervous to leave him...I knew it was going to be really weird.
The morning of his first day he was excited at first. Then it came time to get dressed and brush teeth, get shoes on, etc. He started bawling and kept saying he didn't want to go to school and that he just wanted to stay home. I finally convinced him to get ready. Then I wanted to get pictures of him with his new Cars backpack he picked out...that didn't go too well. He was whining the whole time, saying, "no, I don't want to." Haha.
I finally got him in the car and drove the short distance, (3 minutes, literally), to his school. I got Ryker out and then tried to convince Brody to get out of the car. He would not go unless I was holding him. So I'm holding a three-year-old, who is half my height, and carrying a car seat in my other arm that feels like it's 50 lbs. I'm sure I looked ridiculous. The moment we got inside he started crying. It's a good thing Ryker was so content sitting in his car seat watching all of the kids running around.
The first part of school they have play time, so I started looking through the toys hoping to find something to calm him down. Then I spotted a mini Lightning McQueen. It was awesome...he was so excited to play with him and then his teacher started asking him about cars. That broke the ice and then he felt comfortable. Brody still didn't want me to leave, but I told him I'd be back to pick him up and that he'd have so much fun playing and learning in his new class. He watched Ryker and I leave with a really grumpy face. I blew a kiss to him and left. As soon as I got in the car to drive away I couldn't hold the tears back anymore. I bawled for probably 30 minutes. I was so sad to leave him, and it was so weird not having him at home. I've only left him with family members, so to leave him with someone I really don't know and trusting her to keep him safe and to teach him was really scary for me.
After awhile I was fine. School is going to be so good for him...and for me. It was fun to have some one-on-one time with Ryker and once he went down for a nap, I actually had time for myself...it was pretty nice. Brody was excited to see me when I went to pick him up. That never happens...so I was happy about that. He ended up having so much fun and has been excited to go every day since.
The preschool he goes to is called Right Start Kids Academy. It is in the same facility as his gym class, which is right here in Daybreak in Soda Row. That was a big reason we chose this preschool. His gym fee is included in his school tuition and every Thursday he goes to his gym class with his school class. I think having him go to his gym class without me and Jayson is also a really good thing. His gym teacher says he's doing so much better without us there. The past month or so he had really been starting to act out in the class and was totally disobeying and not wanting to participate. He's been doing somersaults and doing "backflips" into the foam pit and doing really well. That makes me really happy to hear. Another reason we chose this school is because he wasn't going to have to be potty trained. I'm so glad that he was potty trained before school started, but it was nice not having the pressure to get it done. And they take lots of potty breaks to help the kids who aren't quite there yet, which is good for Brody. But his teacher, Miss JoAnne, says he's telling her when he needs to go, so that makes me happy too.
He goes to school every Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30am-11:30am. I'm slowly starting to get used to it, and I'm so happy he enjoys going now. I miss him while he's gone, but I know it's going to be good for him. I'm so proud of him...he's such a big boy now!
There is no way! He is not old enough to go to school.
